Everyone is interested in saving money but few people manage to keep certain costs under control. Utility bills and appliance repairs can drain one's budget.

 

For example, residential air conditioning is very important. Still, there are some habits that boosts its overall costs. Some of them could be avoided, while others improve one's wellbeing and it is usually not worth giving them up just to save a few bucks.

 

The following are the most commonly encountered ones:

- Leaving the air conditioner on overnight

Some people want to know that the temperature will remain the same at night too. They might even use the covers instead of a thin sheet or fleece pajamas instead of shorts. So they leave the AC on for 7-9 extra hours. 

 

This is all about one's preferences. There are home owners who just can't rest if it gets too warm in the room. However, when the unit is on every hour of the night, the costs for the energy bill won't be low.

 

- Leaving the air conditioner on when the windows are open.

This one just wastes one's budget. The cool air will literally go out the window along with the home owner's money.

 

Before opening the windows, it would be best to turn off the air conditioner, even if the windows are supposed to be closed quickly. It's not unheard of for people to open the windows just to ventilate the indoor air a bit and to forget about them for hours. If the air conditioner is on too, it's just not a good idea to do that.

 

- Not scheduling regular check-ups.

All units need to be inspected every now and then in order to make sure that everything is fine. Even if there doesn't seem to be anything wrong, minor repairs might be required.

 

Also, the air filters have to be replaced regularly not only due to hygiene purposes, but also because dirty ones can make the AC system to run longer to cool the rooms. Dirt can even restrict the air flow and make the air conditioner to turn off. 

 

- Using the air conditioning system on to cool the house when cooking.

People have the habit of turning on the air conditioner especially when they use the oven. Sometimes it might be possible to open the windows instead of going for the AC.

 

- Leaving the air conditioner on for the house to be nice and cool when someone returns home.

This can mean leaving it on for a bit or allowing it to run the entire day. An hour or two might not make a big difference. Still, the bills will be high when leaving residential air conditioning unit on 24/7.
